There are 336 tunes supplied in the 1964 tune book for the 1881 Little Flock edition.
There are 318 tunes in the Spiritual Songs hymn book music edition 1981.
About 180 of these are in common, so that this selection adds about 140 tunes to the Little Flock selection and about 160 to the Spiritual Songs selection — about 50% to the available tunes for either collection of hymns, making about 500 tunes in all. Some extra tunes are added: e.g. Ombersley.
The metrical indices allow the tunes to be played by simply clicking on MIDI next to the tune name. The music score can also be viewed and played using the free Finale NotePad program by clicking on SCORE. These scores can be accessed directly from the Spiritual Songs database because, in the original publication, one tune was allocated to each hymn — though this should not discourage users from choosing any tune either from the metrical indices or in the relevant directories.
In the tune book for the 1881 edition, a variable number of tunes were allocated to each hymn. This made the method used in the electronic version of the Spiritual Songs hymn book unsuitable for the 1881 edition, instead users should use the metrical indexes to find a suitable tune.
